Hashrate is the number of guesses per second that miners make to add the next block to bitcoin’s chain, so it is a measure of how much computing power secures the network. This ranks each year since 2013 by how much the hashrate grew, including 2026 so far, when it is roughly flat after reaching 1,071 EH/s at the end of 2025.

Hashrate, year-end = the average of the estimated daily hashrate over the seven days to Dec 31 (Oct 26 for 2026), in hashes per second: 1 TH/s is 1012, 1 PH/s 1015 and 1 EH/s 1018.1 Growth = that figure ÷ the same figure a year earlier, minus 1; 2026 compares Oct 26 with Dec 31, 2025. Peak = the highest seven-day average in the year. Difficulty adjustments are counted by year of the adjustment, up when difficulty rose.2 From 2014 on, each year-end figure is within 7% of the hashrate implied by the difficulty then in force (difficulty × 232 ÷ 600 seconds). Hashrate cannot be observed directly; it is an estimate from block times, so daily values are noisy. Early years are tiny in absolute terms, so their percentages are large. Observed facts, not a forecast.

Mining difficulty is the setting that keeps new blocks arriving about every ten minutes: it rises when blocks come faster than that and falls when they come slower. Because difficulty follows hashrate, the two move together with a delay. A halving cuts the reward miners earn for each block in half roughly every four years. For the biggest single falls in difficulty, see bitcoin’s biggest difficulty drops; for who mines the blocks, the largest mining pools.
