Fees = the total transaction fees in all blocks mined that UTC day, in BTC, from Blockchain.com;1 every ranked day matches the sum of mempool.space’s per-block fee totals to within 0.01 BTC.2 One day per spike: a day is listed only if no day within 30 days either side had higher fees. Days where most of the total came from a single block, usually one transaction paying an accidental fee, are left out: January 29, 2012 (one block carried 120.01 of 220.51 BTC), September 17, 2013 (81.32 of 302.75 BTC) and April 26, 2016 (291.53 of 337.76 BTC); the rule is that no single block may carry more than 25% of the day’s fees.2 Fees (USD), transactions and share of miners’ revenue (fees ÷ subsidy plus fees, both in USD) are Blockchain.com’s daily figures.3 Block subsidy = the new bitcoin per block on that day.
The top 6
Every bitcoin transaction pays a fee to the miner whose block includes it. Miners also earn a fixed block subsidy of new bitcoin, which halves roughly every four years, so fees are the part of miners’ income that depends on demand for block space. When many people want to transact at once, they bid fees up to get into the next block. These are the 15 busiest fee days on record, measured in BTC.
#1
December 22, 2017
1,495.95 BTC
The highest one-day fee total on record: 1,495.95 BTC, worth about $21.3 million at the time, paid across 155 blocks.12 The average transaction paid $55.92 in fees that day, and fees made up 43% of miners’ revenue.3 The same December and January also produced every other day in the all-time top 25 by BTC except halving day, so the 30-day rule used here keeps only this one. The best-of-each-spike rule is why the table shows 8 days from 2017.
#2
April 20, 2024: halving day
1,257.72 BTC
The fourth halving cut the block subsidy (the new bitcoin each block creates) from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC at block 840,000, mined at 00:09 UTC on April 20, 2024. That block alone carried 37.63 BTC in fees, twelve times its own subsidy.4 Block 840,000 was also the first block where “runes”, a protocol for issuing tokens on bitcoin, could be created.5 Fees for the day reached 1,257.72 BTC, about $81.1 million, the highest in US dollars of any day in the table, and 75% of miners’ revenue, the highest share in the table.13 The average transaction paid $128.45. (More on halvings in bitcoin’s halvings, explained.)
#3
November 13, 2017
783.39 BTC
Fees reached 783.39 BTC on November 13, 2017, about $5.0 million.1 That was 31% of miners’ revenue that day, from 309,299 confirmed transactions, an average of $16.16 each.3
#4
June 7, 2017
668.13 BTC
At 668.13 BTC, June 7, 2017 ranks fourth by BTC, but at bitcoin’s price then it was worth only about $1.9 million, an average of $5.56 a transaction.13 One block that day, 470,189, carried 79.66 BTC of fees, the largest single block among the ranked days.2
#5
May 8, 2023
635.35 BTC
The highest-fee day between 2018 and the 2024 halving: 635.35 BTC, about $17.8 million, with 575,051 confirmed transactions.13 Fees were 43% of miners’ revenue.3
#6
December 16, 2023
560.36 BTC
December 16, 2023 had the most confirmed transactions of any day in the table, 638,144, and fees of 560.36 BTC, about $23.8 million.13 Its average fee per transaction, $37.22, was well below halving day’s $128.45.
