How Bitcoin’s Daily Moves Differ by Day of the Week

Bitcoin trades every day of the year, while US stock exchanges and the exchange-traded funds listed on them do not. This post groups bitcoin’s 4,422 daily price changes since September 2014 by day of the week and shows the average, the median and the biggest rise and fall for each.

How it works

Always on

Bitcoin has no closing time

7 days

The bitcoin price series used here has a close for every calendar day, 4,422 consecutive daily changes from September 18, 2014 to October 26, 2026.1 The network itself targets one new block every ten minutes, a setting in its software that makes no distinction between days of the week.2

Stocks

US stock exchanges keep hours

9:30–4:00 ET

The New York Stock Exchange’s core trading session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and the exchange publishes a list of holidays.3 Bitcoin trades through all of those hours and the ones around them.

Funds

Spot bitcoin ETF shares trade on an exchange

Exchange hours

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) lists its shares on Nasdaq and reported 1,439,200,000 shares outstanding on October 29, 2026.4 Shares of a fund like this trade when their exchange is open, while the bitcoin it holds can be traded at any hour. See spot bitcoin ETF flows, explained.

Method

How the table is built

UTC days

Each row groups the daily percentage changes in bitcoin’s UTC close by the weekday of the day the change ends on: for example, the Monday row is the Sunday-close-to-Monday-close change.1 Average is the arithmetic mean of those changes and median is the middle value, which is less affected by a few very large days.

Result

Monday has the highest average, Thursday the lowest

Averages

Across all 4,422 days, Monday’s average change was +0.49% (median +0.26%, up on 54.4% of days) and Thursday’s was 0.00% (median −0.03%, up on 49.5% of days). The biggest single fall, 37.2% on Mar 12, 2020, and the biggest single rise, 25.2% on Dec 7, 2017, were both Thursdays.1

Repeat

Does the same day win each year?

By year

Taking each calendar year from 2015 to 2025 on its own, the weekday with the highest average was Monday in 4 of 11 years and no other weekday in more than 2.1 A pattern in one period has not reliably carried into the next.

Limits

What the table does not show

Not a pattern to rely on

Averages are pulled around by a few very large days: the gap between each weekday’s average and its median shows how much. Each weekday has about 630 observations, so differences of a fraction of a percent are within the range that ordinary variation produces. The table describes the past and says nothing about what any day will bring.
