When Public Companies Bought Their First Bitcoin, data as of 2026-10-16
First purchase = the earliest date in the company’s own filing for its first purchase of bitcoin held as a treasury or investment asset, not bitcoin it mined. “Purchase date stated” means the filing gives when the bitcoin was bought (sometimes only the month, as for Block, MARA, Next Technology and Trump Media); “Disclosure date” means it gives only when the company announced the purchase, so the true purchase was on or before that date. Today = whether the company is in Bittery’s Top 25 public treasury companies ranking; Meitu is listed as having sold its holdings. Mogo (Canada) is left out because the filing found gives only a December 2020 plan, not a purchase date. Not covered: Coinbase (no first-purchase document found), Riot (no treasury purchase found in its 2020 filings), Nexon and Aker (no primary document reachable), and the miners and exchanges not checked. Amounts are as stated; Trump Media’s includes bitcoin-related securities.
The first purchases
Before 2020, bitcoin on a public company’s balance sheet was mostly bitcoin it had mined. This ranks 11 public companies that bought bitcoin as a treasury or investment asset by the date of their first disclosed purchase, earliest first, from each company’s own filings. It is not a full list: Coinbase, Riot, Nexon and others were checked or attempted, but no filing could be found that states a first purchase. Most filings give a disclosure date, not a trade date, and the table says which it is.
