M2 = the Federal Reserve’s M2 money stock, monthly, seasonally adjusted, in billions of dollars (B); start = the previous December, end = December of the year (September for 2026).2 Bitcoin change = the UTC close on Dec 31 (Sep 30 for 2026) ÷ the close on the previous Dec 31, minus 1.3 Observed facts, not a forecast.

How it works

Definition

What M2 is

Cash + deposits

M2 is the Federal Reserve’s broader measure of the US money stock. The Board defines it as M1, which sums currency, demand deposits and other liquid deposits, plus small-denomination time deposits (under $100,000) and balances in retail money market funds, less balances in retirement accounts held at banks and funds.1

Data

Where the numbers come from

Dec to Dec

The Board publishes the money stock monthly in its H.6 release; the table uses the monthly, seasonally adjusted M2 level in billions of dollars as copied by the St. Louis Fed, which runs from January 1959.2 Growth for a year compares December with the previous December (September 2026 with December 2025 for the current year). Bitcoin’s change compares its UTC close on the last day of the same period with the close a year before.3

2020

The 2020 jump

+24.5%

M2 grew 24.5% in 2020, from $15,352 billion to $19,119 billion, the largest yearly rise in the table, and a further 12.4% in 2021. Bitcoin rose 303% in 2020 and 60% in 2021.23

Contraction

M2 fell year on year for 15 months

15 months

In the series, which starts in 1959, M2 was lower than a year earlier in only 15 months, from 2022-12 to 2024-02.2 For the full years, M2 fell 1.0% in 2022 and 2.4% in 2023; bitcoin fell 64% in 2022 and rose 155% in 2023.3

Pattern

Eleven years, a weak link

r = 0.11

Across the 11 full years from 2015 to 2025, the correlation between M2 growth and bitcoin’s change is 0.11 (1 would be a perfect match and 0 none). In the 5 years with M2 growth above the median (4.9%), bitcoin rose in 5; in the 6 years at or below it, bitcoin rose in 3.23 Eleven yearly observations are too few to separate this from chance.

Limits

What the table does not show

Not causal

M2 figures are revised and seasonally adjusted, bitcoin’s calendar-year change depends on the start and end dates, and many other things moved in each year. The table pairs two numbers per year and does not show that either affected the other, or what either will do next.
