How Oil Price Shocks Have Lined Up With Bitcoin, data as of 2026-10-26
Brent, one day = the day’s Europe Brent spot price ÷ the previous trading day’s, minus 1, for days with a bitcoin close on both sides; gaps of more than four calendar days are skipped.1 Ranked by size, rises and falls together. Bitcoin, same day = UTC daily close on that date ÷ the close the day before, minus 1.2 Bitcoin fell on 6 of these 15 days. Observed facts, not a forecast.
How it works
Series
The oil price used here
Brent, daily
The table uses the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s daily Europe Brent spot price, quoted in dollars per barrel. Brent is a benchmark grade of crude oil that many oil contracts are priced against. The series ran to October 20, 2026 in the EIA’s October 21 release; the next update is October 28.1 This post counts 3,052 trading days from September 18, 2014, when Yahoo Finance’s bitcoin data begins, to that date.2
Prices
Where oil reaches consumer prices
Energy +5.2% (Sep)
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in September 2026 and 3.7% over the 12 months. Its gasoline index rose 9.1% in the month and accounted for over half of the monthly increase in the all items index; the energy index rose 5.2% in the month and 20.4% over the 12 months.3 Bitcoin’s record on CPI days is on its own page: bitcoin on CPI release days.
Fed
What the central bank has said
Rate 3¾–4%
On September 16, 2026 the Federal Open Market Committee, the Fed’s rate-setting body, voted 12–0 to raise its target range for the federal funds rate by 1/4 percentage point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent. Its statement said “uncertainty remains elevated owing, in part, to geopolitical developments” and that “inflation remains elevated.”4 The statement does not mention oil. For bitcoin’s moves on those days, see bitcoin on Fed decision days.
2026
An unusually wide year for Brent
39 days of 5%+
Within 2026 the series ranged from $61.08 to $135.51 a barrel on the days in this data set, and closed at $115.22 on October 20.1 Days with a Brent move of 5% or more, by year: 2020: 40, 2021: 8, 2022: 21, 2023: 5, 2024: 2, 2025: 6, 2026: 39.1 Thirteen of the 15 largest daily moves below came in 2020 and two in 2026.
Record
What the whole record shows
Near zero
Across all 3,052 days the correlation between Brent’s daily percent change and bitcoin’s is 0.04, close to zero (1 is a perfect match, 0 none, −1 a mirror image). By calendar year it runs from -0.12 in 2026 to 0.18 in 2020.12 On the 87 days Brent rose 5% or more, bitcoin rose on 43; on the 80 days it fell 5% or more, bitcoin rose on 36.12
Limits
What the table does not show
Not causal
Brent’s daily price is a spot assessment during the London trading day, while bitcoin’s close is at midnight UTC, and bitcoin also trades through weekends, so the two moves cover slightly different hours. The April 2020 swings include the collapse in demand early in the pandemic. Every day also holds other news. The table lines up one oil move with one bitcoin move and does not show that either caused the other, or what either will do next.
